5 Ways to Stay Motivated in a Sales Rut

We’ve all had those moments no matter the career where we feel like we’re putting out to the universe with limited to no semblance of return, where we strategize and execute to the fullest of our capability without seeing much fruit for our labour. In sales specifically, it can be extremely difficult to acquire clients and new leads, which can be discouraging. If all of this sounds familiar to you, here are a few ways you can stay motivated especially if you feel like you’re in a sales rut:

  1. Focus on the positive

One of the best things you can do is to stay optimistic and to focus on all the things you’ve accomplished so far. Staying positive can have great ramifications on your productivity and career, as “Optimistic salespeople sold 37% more policies than pessimists, who were twice as likely to leave the company during their first year of employment” (Entrepreneur).

  1. Put your goals on paper

You may have all these goals floating around in your head, but putting them down in a more concrete way can help make them real. A Harvard Business study revealed that of the group studied the “14% who had goals were 10 times more successful than those without goals and the 3% with written goals were 3 times more successful than the 14% with unwritten goals” (via Huffington Post). In other words, you’ll have a way better chance of success if you clearly write down your goals.

  1. Strive to edge out the competition

This is a great tactic to use if you’re a naturally competitive person. Focus on what your top-selling peers are doing and make a commitment to yourself that you will outsell them.

  1. Celebrate the little wins

So maybe you haven’t quite achieved your goal, but you’re tracking to come close. It’s important that you celebrate your efforts to keep yourself motivated no matter how minute your wins may seem. Celebrating wins along the way can help boost your self confidence and motivation (via Selfication).

  1. Learn about other entrepreneurs and salespeople

Learning about the trials and tribulations of some of the greatest entrepreneurs or salespeople may help you stay motivated! There are tons of books out there as well as podcasts and television series that may be just what you need to get you out of that sales rut!

It doesn’t feel good to be in a rut, but it’s important to get back on your feet and to move forward. Keep your eye on the prize and you’ll be out of it in no time!
